YMCA Project Guatemala
The YMCA is launching an innovative youth leadership project that will culminate in a group of 20 local youth travelling to Guatemala. This three-week trip, hosted by our partner YMCA Guatemala, will include a community service project, working in local schools with local Guatemalan youth, and an exciting outdoor adventure experience. Before they make this incredible trip, the youth will take part in a one-year leadership development program based at the Chatham-Kent YMCA. The program has four main components; philanthropy, community service, fitness and leadership development.
The YMCA’s across Southwestern Ontario are partnered with the YMCA of Guatemala. The aim of this project is to develop leadership skills within the participants so they can pay it forward when they go to Guatemala. While in Guatemala, participants will have the opportunity to work with the YMCA in a hands-on community service project in Guatemala City, spend a day in a Guatemalan school, dive into the local culture and participate in an outdoor adventure.
How do we get there?
There is no cost for the youth to participate in the YMCA Project Guatemala. The success of the challenge relies on the group working together to fundraise as a team, not individuals. The team must meet a preset fundraising goal for their final adventure to Guatemala.
Following the selection of 20 students in March 2014, students will meet weekly from March 2014 until the three week trip to Guatemala in March 2015. Prior to applying students are asked to ensure they can honour this time commitment. The group will participate in pre and post expedition community projects including presentations, events and mentoring initiatives.
